Have fun, save money and make your house smell terrific.
There has been an EXPLOSION in home scents. Reed diffusers, plug ins, candles, tart burners, dry potpourri, candle warmers, aromatherapy diffusers, glade ashtrays (or whatever), simmer pots, ceramic lamp rings, incense, air freshener sprays, cardboard air freshener hang cards for the car, Burning Lampes, scented rocks, carpet fresh, scented dryer sheets, and even scents for the air furnace filter..to name but a few.
A recent trend we ran across is scented silicone light bulb. Yes that's a night light bulb. You can buy a special electric cord for the bulb.

Recently we came across flameless electric candles.. This can be a silicone tipped bulb with a candle surround. The surround can be very fancy. Some are scented surrounds.

One use for a silicone dipped bulb is to use the heated bulb to warm a tall candle ring placed around it..the silicone coating makes sure the light bulb only warms but does not melt the wax.
Inexpensive ways to do scent:
A bowl of vinegar will pick up odors.
You can mull spices on the stoves to give a nice aroma.
Open a window.
Place used coffee grounds (filter and all) to collect refrigerator (and freezer) odors.
Buy air fresher spray and use to clean /silk flowers..Two for one.
Used left over glade plug ins to store linens. Or use a fresh one open a tad; then use in the plug-in later.
Cut dryer sheets in half. Stuff them under your car seats to freshen and in your suitcase abd when soring sheets /linens and seasonal clothes. (In use dry sheets in dryer be sure to soap & water clean filter, too..sheets leave residue on the lint filter)..Use the used sheets to dust! Quick touch up on a picture frame and toss.
Less expensive ways to scent:
-
Get an electric candle warmer or coffee cup warmers..and use tarts...in a baby food jar. Replace lid when not in use. Can melt old candles, too.
-
Make your own scented rocks.
-
Make own Potpourri. (We tried..way too much trouble to dry roses..and preserve them.). You can easily refresh store bought potpourri with oils. Recipe below.
-
Use carpet fresh in spice shakers in drawers. Or use lavendar buds. Or we took rose petals (silk flower) and added some scented oil.
-
Make own Smelly jelly.
A little more expensive way to scent:
6) Reed diffusers do not use electricity. They refresh via scented oils and elixirs. Cheaper than candles or incense. Can be less hassle than lamp rings. they can be used to travel with you in a hotel (make you feel loved, at home) and in places where candles are not permitted -Hospitals. Downside is the oils stain walls and can damage furniture. Cats and dogs (or kids, etc.) can knock over.
Recipes
Smelly jelly..Use liquid potpourri concentrated best and water crystals. Water crystals are found at garden centers. can use Knox gelatin. Put in spice jars..then open lid to fresh, close over cap to store. we put in clear glass holiday bulb..decorated with ribbon, even colored.
Refresh dry potpourri. Use 1/2 oz lamp ring / fragrance oil. Put potpourri in sealable jar or baggie. Ad the oil for a few days. Place in Bowl and enjoy. Can mix scents. Can use a fixitive such as orris root. Adding more things such as cinnamon sticks can be very good to add interest and textures. Lavendar buds add a nice fragrance.
For the holidays, you can take a mason jar, fill with potpourri. add a scented tea light on top in a container, and have a gorgeous air freshener. Some people even add tiny plug in light set and a nice bowl. We like using different fabric tops on the mason jars and a tulle circle when we want to leave open or dress up fabric. We made pine scented rocks out of leftover carpet fresh..and added to our holiday potpourri mix. Other people make scented dough cut outs with cookier cutters..and add cinnamon sticks to their potpourri mix.
Silicone Dipped Bulbs.I've been asked how do you scent, color, thin the silicone.
a) Join a website that specializes in these crafts, to save money, time and frustration from trial and error. Recipelink dot com would be a good place to visit. They talk about how to color, what silicone to use, how to twist, etc.
b) or buy a tried and true recipe

SCENT: You can add some fragrance oil at the last few seconds. If you use refresher oil, that would be a good formula since it has something to retain scent.
I would wear gloves with fragrance or refresher oil).
THIN: Since mineral spirits is a solvent and that is what you clean silicone with, and fragrance oil is a solvent; a GUESS might be to thin silicone with fragrance oil. Refresher oil and fragrance oil can take paint off furniture and it can cause temporary vision problems =been there done that..it is great for dieting, since it tastes awful -LOL....so wash your hands after handling oils.
COLOR:
Dow Corning has 795 silicone in 12 earthy colors.

- blue spruce (green)
