Most hunters know that being scent free, or at least reducing human scent, is as important as the equipment we carry into the field when hunting. There are a few thing we can do to help out in becoming as scent free as possible to be successful in the field.
First, wash all of your clothes, including hats, gloves, pants jackets, etc. with an unscented clothing wash that is specifically designed for hunting and eliminating human odor. I use Scent Blocker's liquid detergents. There are many great products on the market other than what I use.
Second, SHOWER!!! I cannot stress this enough! If you are not clean, you might as well hold up a huge neon danger sign over your head for all the natural world to see. Wash up thoroughly just prior to going in the field with any of the variety of body washes and soaps mades for hunters. Dry off with a towel that was washed in unscented detergent. Always wear deodorant that was designed for hunters and they usually have an ingredient that prevents or even kills the bacteria that causes odor.
Next, put you clothes on in a clean area free from dogs, cats, or any other strong odors that might alert animals to your presence. DO NOT stop at the local gas station to get gas as you leave or hang out near your exhaust. You won't be able to get the odor off of you or your clothes.
When you get to your destination, change into a different set of clothes that have been washed such as the Scent Blocker line of clothing or any of the other carbon lined clothing. Also put on rubber boots. One thing that needs to be done with the set of clothes that you change into would be to keep them in a scent free bag and placed into a scent free container. This keeps them clean, uncontaminated, and will be worth all your effort in the long run.
Lastly, spray down thoroughly with a scent eliminating spray. Spay everything including your bow or gun.
In conlusion, there are alot of variations that are done by others, but this is just a simple guide to help you in being successful. You can be as scent free as possible, but the noses of the game we hunt seem to catch a whiff of us once in a while and we get busted no matter what precautions we take. Good luck and happy hunting!!
