Along with a rigorous exfoliation plan (see details here on Exfoliating Scar Tissue ) that helps remove the scar tissue and re-stimulate your natural skin rebuilding process, there are two more things to remember:

1) anti inflammation: you must, at all times and at all cost, eliminate and suppress inflammatory responses in the site of scarring.
If you let inflammation and irritation take place in the sites of scarring, the healing process will not go very smoothly.

2) collagen & elastin reconstruction: allowing the skin to regain plumpness and eveness depends on how well the site of scarring replenishes its original and natural collagen, elastin, glucosaminoglycans (GAGs) and hyaluronic acid supplies.

Anti inflammation:

1) avoid exposure to all UV sources.  scar tissue and also vulnerable, freshly exfoliated skin is very sensitive and prone to UV damage.  UV exposure from sunlight and flourescent lighting will induce further damage to your skin, particularly when it's trying to heal.

2) avoid inflammatory foods: no sugar, no simple carbohydrates, no deep fried foods and no animal fats.  Period.  Any of the above send inflammatory reaction throughout your body and exacerbates all problematic skin conditions.

3) oral supplements: alpha lipoic acid, vitamin C, green tea extract (note content of EGCG, the higher the better.  EGCG is the most active form of green tea polyphenols as an antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and collagen synthesizer.), and other anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory agents enlisted in my guide, the right way to supplementing beautiful skin.

Collagen Synthesis: Promoting the Synthesis of New Collagen

Collagen is what gives our skin smoothness and structure.  It is created by fibroblasts, which are specialized skin cells located in the dermis. Fibroblasts also produce other skin structural proteins such as elastin (a protein which gives the skin its ability to snap back) and glucosaminoglycans (GAGs).  What we want to do here is to "trick" the fibroblast cells into replenishing NORMAL collagen supplies in the site of scarring.

This is achieved with several substances:

1) FGF: fibroblast growth factors.  These are direct "orders" to the fibroblast cells to start pumping out collagen.

2) TGF-beta: transformation growth factors-beta.  These are also "orders" that can get fibroblasts to pump collagen.

3) Vitamin C: vitamin C in the l-ascorbic acid form acts as a cofactor during many steps of the process. Without sufficient levels of vitamin C, collagen formation is disrupted.  There are many well-funded studies on vitamin C's ability to increase skin renewal by 8 times, if you continually supplement your site of skin trauma with an ample, fresh, bio-available, and active supply of vitamin C.

4) Chemical exfoliants like Alpha Hydroxy Acid or Beta Hydroxy Acids (Salicylic Acid): when you exfoliate faithfully, the exfoliation process itself will stimulate some level of collagen renewal and synthesizing.

5) Peptides: effective, bio-available peptides (like copper peptide and Matrixyl) can stimulate fibroblasts to begin synthesizing collagen.

6) Retinol: a derivative of Vitamin A (stronger counterpart is Tretinoin, the active ingredient in prescription level skin treatments Renova and Retin-A) of which the molecules are small enough to penetrate down to the lowest levels of your skin to find the collagen and elastin area and "whip them back into shape".

7) Hyaluronic Acid, glucosaminoglycans (GAGs) and other glycoproteins: it is very difficult for these substances to penetrate the skin, but they help skin healing by keeping the area well moisturized and cushioned.  These substances are found naturally in the skin and along with collagen, help give the skin its plumpness and smoothness.  Hyaluronic injections often help "replump" trauma sites instantly.

NOTE: Vitamin E has been clinically tested to SLOW and RESTRICT collagen synthesis.  While it is an excellent antioxidant, if you want your collagen to replenish at full speed, avoid this ingredient.

8) Dietary Supplementation:  bio-available (water-soluable) marine collagen capsules and MSM capsules will help replenish collagen reserves in the body.  Also, eat collagen rich foods like (this will sound really gross, but it works) pork skin (without the fat), fish, shark collagen, and pearl powder.  Women over the age of 65 who have had a lifelong habit of consuming high collagen foods have remarkably soft and smooth skin compared to peers who never watched their diet.

9) Using At-Home Apparatus and Equipment to Boost Performance: use of ultrasounds and radio-frequency will stimulate collagen synthesis and rebuilding.  These tools can also help the active ingredients like Vitamin C and growth factors penetrate deeper into the dermis for maximum activity.
