What is a sageo?
Sageo are cords, usually silk or cotton, attached to the kurikata and is used to tie the Japanese sword scabbard to secure it to the Obi belt or hakama when worn. There are several variations in wrapping or tying sageo on the saya for display. Below, are the most commonly used methods of wrapping or tying a sageo for katana , wakizashi , or tanto . The sageo on a tachi is wrapped in a more complicated manner.
