What is a sageo?

Sageo  are cords, usually silk or cotton, attached to the kurikata and is used to tie the Japanese sword scabbard to secure it  to the  Obi belt or hakama when worn. There are several variations in wrapping or tying sageo on the saya for display. Below, are the most commonly used methods of wrapping or tying a sageo for katanawakizashi , or tanto . The sageo on a tachi is wrapped in a more complicated manner.

One type for tanto

A simple and orthodox style for any type of swords

First, insert the sageo through the kurikata. A small sheet of plastic film is convenient for this work.

Insert the sageo wrapped in plastic through the kurikata.

This sageo has different colors on each side.

This is the way to tie it.

Finished.

Next method for wrapping or tying the sageo is only for display.
It is not good for a real sageo as it may damage it.

Make a knot.

Make knots again, and again...

Insert the sageo through the knots.

Fix the shape by pulling the sageo from both sides to adjust and tighten it.

I would like to thank Sumie Kashima of Japanese Sword Shop "Usagiya" for providing the pictures in this guide.
