Antiques from Turtle Rock ~ store, weekly ebay auctions, me ~your invitation!
Antique China shows wear because someone has scrubbed it with an abrasive, particularly the beautiful gold. Most Haviland china is decorated on top of the glaze. Only feu de four or bleu de four has art under the glaze. It is also equally important not to soak the china; especially the china with gold, do not allow it to sit in water.
The best method for cleaning is the same for antique china or antique silver:
- Do NOT place china in a dishwasher. Ever. (This is the surest way to avoid heart ache.)
- Clean the china very quickly after it is used. Hardened food is more difficult to wash off.
- Do not allow the china to soak in water. It loosens the gold and it loosens the paint - the art.
- Avoid using abrasive sponges and powders. Use your hand, then use a sponge. Your fingers will feel the residue. A sponge next, if your fingers don't clean it thoroughly.
- Shower the plate. It works better than bathing the plate and has less grease sharing. Do not soak the plate, put an antibiotic soft soap drop on the plate, hold it under running water.
- Do not brace the plate on the sink. Hold the plate in your hands and shower it. You don't want a stress fracture.
- As you are drying the plate, in a large fluffy towel, double check it for residue. This really is fast & easy, a dinner table set for 8 can be cleaned up in 20 minutes ~ probably about the same time to wash the dishes, put them in the dishwasher and unload!
