The square or cube shaped "floats" sold on ebay and in nautical gift shops are curio floats.
These glass squares were not used in the fishing industry and were never fished. They were intended for decoration.
The square "floats" are not from Japan.
These glass squares are currently being manufactured in China and can be ordered wholesale.
They are produced for the nautical gift stores. They are curio decorations only, not real floats.
The new square "floats" are from China and the older ones are from Taiwan. None are from Japan.
Some square glass floats are actually old and were produced in the 1950's and 1960's in Taiwan.
Some are stamped on the bottom"Made in Taiwan", some have stickers with "Made in Taiwan".
These glass squares came in three sizes: 2"/ 4" / 6".
They are mentioned in Amos Wood's float books as curio floats for decoration purposes.
Regardless, in many ebay descriptions sellers refer to these squares as "authentic, Japanese, used fishing floats".
They are not "authentic", not "Japanese" and not "used fishing floats".
I hope this short guide helps you. I wrote it to help out other float collectors.
May the floats be with you,
