Well, if you have (or are going to) read my review of the SONY Cybershot DSC-W55 Digital Camera, I mentioned some of the accessories available for the DSC-W55. This in, my opinion, is one of many things that makes the DSC-W55 a fantastic, compact, slim digital camera.
One of the available accessories is the SONY VCL-DH0730 0.7X Wide Angle Conversion Lens. This lens does require the SONY VAD-WB Lens Adaptor. Both of which, work great! Both items mount easily to your Cybershot, with no problem. This particular lens is great for taking close-up nature shots, family portraits and, is a great all-around accessory for your Cybershot. The key advantage is you can fit more content into your photographs, ie - when you're taking those family/friend group photos, Bob or Mary won't be cut half out of the picture. Lol...!!! Yes, you do lose a small amount of magnification capability (as you would with any wide angle conversion lens) but, you can compensate for this, to some extent, with the "ZOOM" control of your Cybershot. On a recent vacation, I left the lens attached to my camera virtually all the time (I shot over 1600 pictures).
The only thing you want to be aware of, if you decide to get this accessory, is that in certain low-light/night photograhs that require the use of the built in flash, the adaptor and lens will impair the photo a little, as it casts a small shadow in part of the photo. If you happen to have an external/remote flash source (I do not yet have this) then there is no need to worry about this occurring. So, my recommendation - if you're going to take low-light/night photos using the flash remove the adaptor and lens. Otherwise, if you're taking a low-light/night photo, without the flash, ie - a night time city skyline shot (you'll need a tripod to steady the camera for a shot like this), leave the adaptor and lens attached. You'll end up with a fuller photograph.
During the day, this is of no concern. So, if you want to use the MACRO feature on your Cybershot to get a really close-up photo of those flowers in your wife's garden, or that watch you're selling on eBay, go for it! I recommend this lens to anyone who has acquired the DSC-W55. It, along with the lens adaptor, are well worth the investment. Particularly if you wish to improve the quality/contant of your photos.
I also recommend that you stay with SONY OEM equipment. There are lots of "aftermarket" accessories available for your DSC-W55 here on eBay and, at your local retailer. However, (speaking from experience) these may not always fit properly nor, may be of the same high quality SONY is renowned for.
And, you can find most of the SONY OEM accessories, like this lens and the adaptor, here on eBay. Best-Buy and Circuit City carry very few of the accessories. If you have a SONY store in your city (I don't) you're fortunate.
Have fun taking your pictures! Happy eBaying!
