FOR QUILTING
Fabric-Silk People don't think of using silk for quilting, but it can easily be used. It has a wonderful shine and gives the quilt a sparkle. Here are a few tips when working with silk:
1. Change the setting on your iron to low or medium heat and do not use steam.
2. Do not try to piece small patterns pieces with it , unless you use an interfacing first. This helps keep the silk from sliding and gives it more body. Be careful if you are going to use a iron on interfacing, it may cause the fabric to buckle, I prefer to use a non-fusible interfacing. I hand stitch the interfacing in place and then remove the basting stitches once the pieces are in place.
3. The silk is great to use as an embellishment. I like to tack it in place with glass beads, or vintage buttons or charms.
DYING TO USE SILK
Slik is very easy to dye, and you can purchase a dye off of the internet(Ebay) made just for silk dying. With just water and your iron you can make beautiful silk scarfs or dye your own silk fabric to use in a quilt project.
All you do is wet the fabric, place it in a sandwich baggie, add a small amount of the silk dye and gently squeeze the fabric until all the dye has been absorbed into the fabric. Take the fabric out of the baggie and press with a cool iron until the fabric is dry ! So start looking on Ebay for the silk and the dye and start making those Holiday gifts.
