Unique Kataezome Prints
Okinawa Bingata
Teacher of Sosaku Hanga Artists
The first time I saw an exhibit of Serizawa's work, I was incredibly mesmerized by his amazing creations. His totally unique style, including his phenomenal designs, brilliant color sense and artistic stunning compositions, inspired me to learn as much as I could about this fascinating artist and to search out and collect some of his very beautiful Museum quality work.
By 1925, Serizawa had already been widely admired and acclaimed for his distinctive Kataezome style, combining Japanese hand-stenciled dyeing techniques with those of Okinawan bingata. This he applied with amazing success to kimono and fabric patterns, wall hangings, paintings, fans, calendars and original prints. Most importantly, Serizawa became the leading artist of "Mingei" ~ which in Japanese generally means folk art. These prints are superb examples of his work. After World War II, master artist Serizawa Keisuke founded his own teaching studio and workshop in his native city of Shizuoka. In 1956 he received the highest award in Japan and was named a "Living National Treasure"; by the Emperor of Japan. After his death in 1984 the Tohoku Fukushi University in Sendai, Tohoku District, built a museum comprised solely of Serizawa's art. The Serizawa Keisuke Art & Craft Museum now holds and exhibits over 200 examples of his incredibly beautiful fabric patterns and wall hangings, and hundreds of examples of his paper dyeing workshop productions such as original prints, fans and popular calendars. Exhibited world wide, numerous one man showings have included ones in 1979 at the Mingei International Museum in San Diego, entitled "Serizawa Keisuke : A Living National Treasure of Japan", in 1998, the Riverside Municipal Museum, Riverside, California, a major retrospective entitled, "The Art of Serizawa Keisuke" and many, many others.
