You may not know this, but yarn needs to breathe. If you place yarn in plastic it can mildew from the moisture that builds up and you'll find that favorite sweater is ruined. Once yarn has molded it is almost impossible to save it. I have found rice bags useful in storing my fine yarns. The material allows the yarn to breathe. Try to use natural materials such as bags made of cotton or linen to store your fine woolens. These natural materials allow the yarn to breathe and don't trap the moisture that causes mold.
There are many labels that say that yarn is washable and indeed some are, but if you want your item to last longer I highly recommend professional cleaning for items made from yarn, especially hand knitted and crocheted items. Washing machines can cause yarn to stretch out and take away the lovely drape that fine knits have. Dry cleaning is usually the best way to care for your fine woolens.
You will find many beautiful hand knitted and crocheted items in eBay stores made from designers who are proud of their hard work and have taken the time to properly care for the yarn that they use and the skill needed to create their unique design. Each of us want our designs to last for years of your enjoyment.
Unfortunately, not all of us really knows how to properly care for these yarns. Luckily, I was given this information from an expert and now I know too and wanted to pass on this information so that all of us can enjoy our fine woolens for years to come.
