Seagrove's N.C., a town of less than 300 people, has a pottery tradition that dates back before the American Revolution. Today Seagrove and its surrounding areas of Whynot, Star, Erect, Westmore Robbins and a few others are known as Seagrove Pottery and is the Pottery capital of the United States with over 100 potters turning in this area.
The tradition began over 200 years ago when English and German settlers produced primarily functional earthenware. Due to the high quality of local clay and central location, the area became know for its pottery. In the 1920's Northern tourist began to pour into the area and this marked a change from funtional pottery to more decorative ware. Today many of the artist are 8th and 9th generation potters who fashion their craft after their ancestors.
Seagrove pottery is of the finest quality with many of the potters still turning funtional and creative pieces. The funtional pottery can be placed in the oven. microwave and dishwasher. The decorative pottery ranges from Salt glaze, Wood fired, Raku, Crystalline, Pit fired, Face Jugs and much more.
