Okay, so I would like to share with everyone my experience with buying SD memory from eBay.
Don't do it. If you do, it should be from someone you have already bought before and trust, or a relatively local seller. I bought a 2GB Mini-SD with an SD adapter. To my surprise, my computer had only ever been able to read 1GB from the card. I am a busy person, being a student and businessperson and all. Sometimes small things like that don't show up on my radar right away. So I left some positive feedback for the seller, because the thing worked great. Also, never having seen the technology before, I was dumbfounded by how far technology is advancing is such a short amount of time, and amazed at how small people have made such large amounts of memory, in so short a time period.
Unfortunately, however, with more technology comes more complicated scams. After a couple months of using the SD card in my phone - oh that's right, another reason I didn't notice is because I had used it in my cell phone where I don't ever utilize more than 1GB of memory anyways - so after a couple of months I had a little free time, and I got to work to solve the problem with my computer. I had an integrated card reader in my laptop so I just plugged it right in. After a while of hacking into my computer to find the error, my eyes began to be opened to the reality of my plight. I had been scammed. Never quick to rush to conclusions, I began to search online. Sure enough, I was not the first to experience such a dilemma.
Apparently sellers can even hack the SD card itself to say it has more memory than it actually has. Google it if you don't believe me. Well, the sellers who I bought from didn't bother to hack *my* SD card - rather they just typed it directly on the card! So, it SAYS 2GB of memory right on the card, I PAID FOR 2GB, but yet I only have 1GB!!!
I was sooo upset. That was like six months ago or more, I forget. I still use the absolutely great and working and wonderful, but only *1GB*, mini-SD card, in my Blackberry Pearl, which I also got here on eBay. The phone is wonderful and beautiful, especially after I hacked the operating system and gave it the lastest software, but that's another story.
I was even more upset because I had left positive feedback because it functioned when I plugged it in! Further, I used to delete things when I was through with the sale; so I had completely forgotten who the seller was, and I had no way to find out, despite my emails to eBay!
BOTTOM LINE:
PLEASE *CHECK* your SD cards (and all memory for that matter) *before* leaving any feedback! I mean *REALLY* check it, and MAKE SURE it *is* what it says it is! Then be sure to leave NEGATIVE feedback, warning of a *fraudulent seller*! Just because it works and everything looks good right away does not mean it really is what it says!
p.s. I had written this review before, but I deleted it because I wrote it in anger - thus I wrote it in bias. I wanted to have time to cool off before writing an unbiased review.
I am constantly reminded every time I open the back of my Blackberry, where I see a 2GB Mini-SD card which I know only has 1GB of memory actually on it; which dredges up feelings of spite, betrayal, and regret. And I am generally a happy, optimistic, loving person.
UPDATE (12/15/2008): I now have a Blackberry Curve (8320), and I have an 8GB micro SD that I bought off eBay. Don't let the reviews fool you - it Does allow for an 8GB card! Blackberry says that it only holds 1-2GB, but they are wrong; they just want you to spend $1,000 on a Blackberry Bold.
