"Give me a portrait of Grandma?", I asked my 7 year old granddaughter. I spread out a bunch of various papers, cutouts, embellishments with letters and pictures. 

Even her grandmother was astounded by how well and informed the little girl transformed two blank pages.

And so begins the making of a scrapbook. Like a DNA, each book and each page offers a unique perspective by each person.

Some are planned, others come together after a gathering of pictures, and paper stuck between blank pages.

Somewhere there's a beginning, maybe even a plan to build a book. A scrapbook's beauty is the seemingly random design that somehow come together creating a portrait of a person, life or family.

It's a history with the creative elements, a family affair open on the coffeetable...Scrapbooking - history repeating itself.

We have 3 huge family scrapbooks - dating back to the late 1800s. Using some time worn elements along with current family, we've found that the antique or vintage scrappy paper lends a unique definition...while inviting the reader.

Remember, the scrapbook isn't only for family members, but also for friends who visit. Sooo...tell them an interesting story with unique aspects.

By happenstance, after looking at our older family scrapbooks and pages, we began looking at the antique paper. Viola!  Rather than put together just a collection of personal refernce, we began looking at the scrapbook as our ancestors did.... sort of a biographical book to our times and places.

Vintage and antique advertisements, magazine food cutouts, antique die cut cards changed the whole dimensions. The more recent pages using contemporary elemets coupled with the vintage paper added quite a pop to the pages.

Just as in life, planning is important. But, living has many random events... capturing the moment with the visual emotive context sometimes comes together in a random fashion...especially when the younger children or grandchildren are involved.

Perhaps the best compliment a scrapbook can receive is when a complete stranger to the family or its history, finds it a fascinating book to read and leaf through.
