This great vintage crossword-puzzle game was one of the few wonderful old parlor games that taught as well as entertained!
Every Saturday evening, we sat around the old card table with our trusty dictionary trying to figure out how to make a 50 point word out of three W's, two H's, and five P's! I was about 6, and my sister was about 8, and our folks were really sneaky because they knew a lot more words than we did!
It was always an all-out battle of the minds, but despite our youth and inexperience, we still managed to win a game or two!
This old Selchow and Righter game was one of our favorites, along with Monopoly, Mr. Ree, and Parcheesi. In elementary school, my teachers were always amazed by my grasp of college level vocabulary, and no one believed my mom when she told them I got it from playing Scrabble. Over the years, we have repeatedly pulled out the old Scrabble board when things got too boring, and we've spent many hours trying to figure out how to make a 60 point word out of nine F's and three P's. Oh, well... :)
If you want a great family game that never goes out of style, grab Scrabble. Even after 60 years, it is still available on every toy store's shelf! Play it with the whole gang.
