Obviously, everyone can not simply switch to more fuel-efficient cars or ride a horse. However, everyone CAN use good driving techniques, better maintain their cars, reduce weight and drag, and better plan and prepare trips.
1. Improve your driving techniques
Drive Sensibly. Don't tailgate, which causes excessive braking.
Aggressive driving (speeding, rapid acceleration and braking) wastes gas.
Observe the Speed Limit - Try to maintain steady speed.
Using cruise control on the highway.
2. Keep your vehicle properly maintained
Get a LOCKING gas cap!
Keep your engine properly tuned
Check & replace air filters regularly
Use the recommended grade of motor oil
Keep tires properly Inflated
Remove snow tires during good weather seasons
3. Reduce weight and drag.
Remove excess weight from trunk, back seat, ect.
During cold weather watch for icicles frozen to car frame (up to 100 pounds).
Reduce drag (luggage rake, bicycles, skis).
Avoid Excessive Idling
Lower tailgate on your pick-up truck.
4. Plan and prepare
Select shortes, fastest route.
Avoid Rush Hour traffic when possible.
Carpool and Ride Share when possible
Ride a bike or walk
Avoid rough roads whenever possible
5. Other Tips
Don't fill up unless you are near empty (reduces weight).
Drive a fuel efficient vehicle (if you had one, you don't need this guide)
Drive someone else's car (Haaaaa!)
