This guide is primarily written for those who run outdoors. For you treadmill runners, make sure to not get lost on the way.
Running on the roads, trails, or paths outdoors requires a certain degree of concentration. Unfortunately many disregard this responsibility and run with their iPods blaring. This is a hazard to both themselves and the people around them. If you run with music please consider taking some of the following steps to prevent accidents.
Running on the roads, trails, or paths outdoors requires a certain degree of concentration. Unfortunately many disregard this responsibility and run with their iPods blaring. This is a hazard to both themselves and the people around them. If you run with music please consider taking some of the following steps to prevent accidents.
- 1. Keep your volume at around 50% -This will allow you to hear other athletes, car horns, all while still focusing on your music.
- 2. When in high traffic areas, lose the earbuds -Running with your favorite song isn't worth being hit by a car, so make sure to remove your headphones while at busy intersections or high traffic pedestrian areas.
- 3. Pre-select a playlist before running -shuffling through songs is another distraction, not to mention that it forces you to break form and lose concentration.
- 4. Run with a group or partner at least once per week -Don't bring your iPod on this one! You will learn to think and talk to others and appreciate a run in a different way. Running shouldn't be a solitary activity every day, so get out there and share it with someone else!
- 5. Stay off the shoulder -This is by far the most dangerous place for a distracted endurance athlete to be. Either avoid these roads entirely, or take off your headphones while running on the shoulder.
