Alot of people ask me "what do I need to launch" their rocket and "how does it work?" as they have little or no experience. However, many of us have some when the rocket hobby was booming over 40 years ago.
Supplies Needed To Launch and Get Started
- A ready-to-fly rocket or one that requires building, preferably a skill level 1 as minimal construction skills required.
- A launching unit that comes with the rod, the platform and the controller.
- Model rocket recovery wadding and some engines which are sold in hobby stores. Engines usually come in 3-4 packs and include engine plugs and ignitors.
Pre-flight Lift Off Requirements
- Assemble and prepare your rocket for flight.
- Place the engine and recovery wadding into the rocket according to the instructions.
- Locate a safe and open area outdoors depending on the engine size to launch your rocket and place on a flat surface
- With the launching unit assembled, place the rocket on the metal rod.
3..2..1.. Lift Off!
- Double check all connections, construction and area location for safety.
- Using the electronic controller, ignite the engine and step away quickly upon electrical ignition.
- Watch the rocket accelerate straight upwards from a safe position.
- The rocket will begin to turn at an angle and start coasting into the air. You will need to keep track of where the rocket is going at this point.
- When the rocket reaches it's peak, it will be close to a 45 degree angle moving sidewards.
- The rocket will begin to separate from the nose cone to the rest of the body and ejection of the parachute will begin.
- The parachute then is fully opened and the deployment of the recovery begins as the rocket starts going downward.
- Finally the rocket touches down with the parachute.
- At this point it is your job to locate the rocket!
- You can re-launch it, but will need another engine as they can only be used once.
Other Guides and Tips:
- Be sure to read and follow the instructions of the National Association of Rocketry Safety Code manual which is included in your rocket package.
- You will need carpenters glue or plastic cement glue for rocket assembly.
- Beginning age requirements is 10 years and up with adult supervision for 12 years and under.
