Well, I've got to say this, what a waste of paper and ink.
The Yugioh Gold Series released last week and the product premise is interesting. One pack of 25 cards. Three of the cards have a new gold foil technology applied to them, the other 22 are considered common. The price tag is anywhere from $20 - $35 a pack.
Well I bought it just to see what I'd pull. Guess what I pulled - yep, you guessed it, 25 reprints of cards I already have. Some of the reprints are of cards so old, some the current players you see today were born after those cards were first distributed to the American market. My 3 Rare Gold cards - Brain Control, Cyber Dragon, and Breaker the Magical Warrior. All decent cards, but nothing I don't already have two or three times. Cyber Dragon in particular has been reprinted several times, killing the collectibility of an otherwise great card.
Let's not forget that at $20 a pack (this is the lowest I've seen it), this is not a startup product. This is not for a beginner. It doesn't come with a play mat and instruction booklet. This product is meant for the experienced players of the game. So why the dud of a checklist? Why on earth would you waste the time and effort to make more reprints? I just don't get it.
The packaging is superb and the gold foil technology actually does look really good. But it would have looked much better on cards I didn't already have. There is one big hitter that people are looking for Card Crush Virus. Up until now, this card has only been made available to Shonen Jump tournament winners so this card is generally pretty rare (but still a reprint). This one card does not justify spending any money on this product.
If you've got the $25 to spend on Yugioh products you would do far better buying yourself 2 Phantom Darkness Special Edition boxes. You'll get the 2 special edition super rare holos and 6 packs of new cards to rework your deck with. You might also get lucky enough to pull a secret rare which tends to be a very powerful card (and fairly valuable as they are selling well here on ebay).
As for this Gold Series product we can give an A for presentation but an F for effort - no new cards really wipes away any need for this product and it's a waste of a really cool printing technology.
Enjoy the game!!
