Wrestling Card Collecting is becoming much more popular these days.
As a kid, I remember watching wrestling on TV and even going to some of the matches but it wasn't like this. Today's wrestling continues to be about showmanship and storylines but there are some real dynamic personalities involved and a whole lot of beautiful women too. As a flea market vendor I began to get lots of requests for these cards and I jumped into it and have done very well.
The newest product out there is 2007 Topps WWE Action cards. Unlike previous sets, every card in this set shows action shots from various matches and some of the photography is great - lots of aerial shots which might be the most exciting part of the match are captured on the cards.
The box comes with 24 packs and 7 cards to a pack. Hobby boxes contain autgraphs and relics though you are not guaranteed to get one in a box. Retail boxes offer lenticular motion card inserts (1 in 8 packs) and temporary tattoo inserts (1 in 4 packs). While Hobby boxes will cost about $40-$45, the Retail boxes cost around $30.
My first thoughts are that this set is interesting but notterribly marketable. While the action shots are cool, they leave no room for the wrestlers names and there is no indication if it was a special match that is pictured. Without the wrestlers names on the front of the card, it is sometimes difficult to know who you are looking at. There are also no Diva cards or Legends cards which seem to be in every other set. Whether you like the women or not, they are just as popular (if not more so), than the men and are an intergral part of the storytelling nature of the sport. As a man in his mid-30's, I like the legends cards and the lack of them I think hurt's this product (where is S.D. Special Delivery Jones already?!?).
As the hobby box does not guarantee an autograph/relic it makes justifying the price difference over the retail product difficult. The retail inserts are just ok. Lenticular motion cards have never been terribly popular though the temporary tattoos might be really popular with kids. Years ago temporary tattoos were the coolest thing going, now they are a bit played out but I have to admit that the tatoos are well done and look great.
As a seller, I'm not thrilled with this product. No divas, no legends and lackluster inserts don't really help. On the plus side, it is inexpensive (good for kids) and the action photos are pretty good for the most part). This would have made a good subset in a different product. The autograph/relic guarantee should always exist on the hobby product or else why make it at all.
