Reading Comprehension Guides from Logos School
Upper Grammar Literature: Book I (The Princess & the Goblin, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, Rascal, Shadow of a Bull, & The Cricket in Times Square)
This 70-page guide is written for 5th grade and up but can be used for middle school, too. In fact, older students can appreciate the literary elements of the selections and understand the stories on a deeper level than elementary students. For older students the parent - teacher can supplement with additional questions, using the guide to get you started. Also, older students can research the time period covered in the books and other relevant topics to broaden their understanding.
The worksheets in these spiral-bound soft-cover books are reproducible, and answer keys are included for factual questions, although many questions encourage thought and discussion with a parent - teacher. Some questions ask the student to summarize and can used to teach conciseness and clarity in writing. Study guides can help students better appreciate good literature and develop writing and critical thinking skills as well.
There is a “Suggestions for Use” page, and one suggestion is that the answers should be written more as a short essay rather than short answer and that using proper grammar, punctuation, spelling, and style be required. This will emphasize the importance of learning all of those grammar rules!
There are 5 different guides for classic books for which guides may not be available from Progeny Press or Total Language Plus; the Logos guides are not as comprehensive though. They cost about $15 new.
Be sure to search by TITLE AND DESCRIPTION. These guides are not readily available used but can be ordered from Logos School.
