Are you an Ebay Seller? Do you want to become one? Well, when selling certain products, research is a necessary part of the selling process.
If you are selling any form of vintage and/or collectible item, you'd better do your research! This is key in receiving the best bids. Here is a scenario for you to consider:
2 items are being auctioned off. They appear to be the exact same item. Item number 1 has a title something like this:
~ Depression Glass Ruby Stained Compote
The description then goes into the company's name that produced the compote. The seller explains that it has been inspected for cracks, chips, and fleabites. They also take the time to include measurements. They know the approximate year the item was produced, and other pertinent information.
Item number 2 has a title something like this one
~ Vintage Red and Clear Glass Cup
In the description, it describes the glass item as it appears to them. However, they give no company or measurements. They also only mention the lack of cracks.
Now, if you were searching for this item, which would inspire more confidence? Glass collectors know what fleabites are, and they want measurements. And a company could make or break a sale!
So, you don't sell collectibles.... Why research? Well, there are other areas in which knowledge will increase selling power. Here are just a few:
- Books - First printing, Binding, condition ratings, IBSN numbers- Do you know all of these?
- Clothing- What is Rise in pants, Do you know how to measure bust, do you know your materials if a tag is missing?
- Crafts- Acid free, archival, OOAK, and others are tems you need to be familiar with!
- Electronics - Compatability, Age, and Amps may need to be researched
These are but a few examples.
Now you admit, you need to research what you are selling. How do you go about doing this?
- Use the internet to your advantage! Search using key words. Under the search listing you will see the word "Cached". If you click on this, your search words will be highlighted in the article. This makes looking up the info you need so much easier!
- Go to the library! I know it may have been years. Well, dust off that library card! Ask for assistance. The librarians will get you started!
- Buy research material! Having books at your disposal is an invaluable tool.
- Take advantage of Ebay's Discussion Boards. There are boards devoted to every category possible!
- Join a group on Ebay. They are geared towards personal interests as well as selling groups. Yes, this is a very FUN way to research!
As, sellers we are all here to try to make some money? Well, why not make the most you can!
Good luck with your research! Hope some of this has been helpful.
