Through my experience on Ebay, and watching other Ebayers who sell art, I've seen how people are getting ripped off. Some sellers are printing off reproductions of their artwork from their home computer printers. I assume that they are creating artwork on the computer or scanning it into a digital file. (If the seller did not personally create the art, this illegal reproduction of someone's art is an infringment of Copyright) After storing the art as a file on the computer, they print these images through their ink jet or laser printers; these practices make the artwork look very fuzzy and blurred.
Real art is professionally photographed and reproducted as slides and digital enhanced files and taken to a professional printing company for reproduction.. With these digital files, professional Giclee prints can be made, or Off set Lithograph posters can be printed . This is where the differences in reproduced artwork can be easily explained. A common computer printer only prints in 4 colors (Yellow, Red, Blue, and Black), whereas a Giclee printer can inject up to 8 colors and variants and shades of those colors. Professional printers can print in as many as 12 different colors. Furthermore, professional printing machine operators are trained to: clean their equipment to prevent smudges and misaligned color borders; adjust the ink quantities to precise levels; and use their vast collection of experience and knowledge to ensure a quality product. When fade resistant inks are used in posters, and care is taken when ordering and handling the paper, a professionally made print will out live a computer copy by many, many years. Paper which is commonly used in personal printers (at home) does not have the UV resistant or anti-aging characteristics of quality, heavy-weight paper used in professional printing shops. Acid Free papers are essential to keeping artwork from "yellowing" over a short period of time. Furthermore, all items which are used in framing (matting and mounting) should also be acid free to prevent color transfering from the mat onto the artwork.
If the Seller's auction doesn't describe the printing process used in reproducing the piece, please ensure you enquire before placing a bid.
