To remove old musty odors, mildew smells that have been stored away, or cigarette smoke if you go to places where others smoke, just use this method of washing the item. Lets say also that you stored some clothing item in the attic or garage or basement and it now smells like that musty, mildew almost having mold on it and you think you will just throw it away...DO NOT!!! I almost did with a good tapestry and now its odor free and in great smell condition.
Try this first: Use one part vinegar (preferably white) to about 3 parts water or 1 cup vinegar to 3 cups water lets say, and soak the item for a few hours or just let it sit in the washing machine on soak for awhile, wash it again, and the smell is out. I could not believe it with a lovely old antique table topper I had and the smell was totally gone. Works on most washable fabrics or wiping down an item too.
Use cold water if you think the colors will run!
Update on not letting smoke ruin your clothes, here is a tip I learned recently, after you have your item clean, spray it with aeresol hairspray, you need to use the aerosal type, I get mine at the dollar store. If you have some allergies, you might want to spray it outside, or not use this method. Or perhaps wear a mask. Extreme isnt it! Then you can store items this way also. You can spray just about anything, leather, suede, whatever. I knew hairspray was good for something besides hair...
You will be surprised the odors magically disappear,or are not to be found again, and yes, if your going to go back to the crowd where there is smoking going on because you love them, respray your apparel before you go each time.
