Getting Red Stains out of carpets is the number one complaint by homeowners. You just spent $5,000 Bucks on new carpet and your 2 year old just dropped a bottle of Kool-Aid. Or your friends talked you into a wine tasting party at your house - Next day red stains everywhere.

Kool-Aid, colored wines, Jell-O, or any product that has an acid based dye will permanently change the dye structure of carpet fibers, especially nylon carpets which makes up 85% of the homes in the U.S. If you have stain master carpets or teflon protected carpets, you must clean it immediatly or over time just by walking on the carpet will grind the stain into the carpet fibers. Now you have a permanent discolor on your carpet. So now what!

You can buy Red Be Gone which includes a manual to do it yourself. Sells for about $16.99 for the 2 part system.

Buy Red Be Gone

The heat transfer and the right chemicals works most of the time for red dye removal. Some products I have seen on the market bleaches the stain which you want to avoid using those chemicals.

Another option is to make the chemical yourself. Either way - You will need a cheap Iron, White Terry Cloth Towel and chemcial of choice: RED BE GONE or Make the chemcial yourself.

Ingredients: Take a 32 ounce empty bottle and add 1/3 ammonia (part A) and 2/3 water (part B). Now follow the directions below.

RED BE GONE DIRECTIONS

  1. Rinse the Red Stain - Clean area to rinse out any chemicals to avoid any chemical reaction. If you don't own a carpet cleaning extractor or simlar - Then follow the directions 2 - 4. If do own a carpet cleaning machine then skip to step 5.
  2. Turn on Iron to medium setting. Best at slightly below the medium setting on your iron
  3. Take a damp white terry cloth towel (which you can buy at any deparment store like home depot, dollar stores, k-mart, target etc.) and fold the towel in half and place it over the stain.
  4. 20 seconds apply Iron for heat transfer: Take your Iron and firmly apply pressure on top of the towel. This heat will lift the residue of the stain to the towel. This will rinse any chemicals from your carpet. Please note: do not apply more than 20 seconds.
  5. Mix part A and Part B in the spray bottle
  6. Saturate the red stain area
  7. Take a damp towel and fold in half. Place towel over red stain area.
  8. 30 seconds apply Iron for heat transfer: Take your Iron and firmly apply pressure on top of the towel. This heat will lift the stain to the towel. Please note: do not apply more than 30 seconds.
  9. Repeat this procedure (step 6, 7 and 8) no more than 3 times
You will notice your towel with a yellow stain.
Please note: Do not perform this procedure more than 3 times. You may not get 100% of the stain removed. Keep in mind you are on your hand and knees and will notice many defects in your carpets. In Reality, you are walking around, so step back look for the spot from a distance, you may not ever see it. If you perform this procedure too many times may discolor the carpet fibers

This heat transfer procedure listed above, also works without any chemicals on just about any spot. Try it!
