A coalition of Law Enforcement Agencies and Non-Profits across the U.S. decided to collect, reprogram, and redistribute used cell phones to any community member who needs a phone to dial 911 in case of an emergency.

According to the Secure the Call Foundation, an estimated 45 million cell phones are sitting in drawers across the U.S. "These old cell phones could help tens of thousands of our citizens feel safe and secure by converting them into 911 emergency-use cell phones, and given away for free to those in need," state the foundation's officials.

Upon receiving cell phones, they will be inspected, cleaned, wiped clear of software and old numbers, charged, and reprogrammed to use to dial 911 for free. No carrier plan is needed to dial 911 as long as the cell phone can be turned on. These cell phones will be distributed to domestic violence centers, senior centers, neighborhood watch groups, school crossing guards to name a few.

By donating your cell phone, you will help someone in need, reduce your clutter, and recycle!
