As a professional mechanic, tool collector and enthusiast, I have come across many professional mechanics hand tools that can often be aquired for much less money by paying attention to detail and doing some research first.
Designing, engineering, manufacturing and distributing tools takes huge sums of money and many tool companies choose to outsource manufacturing a specialty tool rather than produce their own, because the cost of engineering and "tooling up" is too high. This is especially true when it comes to low volume specialty tools that are not in high demand and do not have high sales volume.
Of the major professional tool companies (Snap-On, MAC, Matco and Cornwell ), Snap-On Tools, by far manufacturers the highest percentage of their tools themselves. When it comes to the Snap-On brand the general rule is, if it's branded Blue-Point, then it is probabally rebranded, but there are some SNap-On branded tools also.
The purpose of this guide is to identify identical tools that are sold by Snap-On, MAC, Matco and Cornwell, that can be purchased elsewhere for much less money, many times under a different brand name for half the cost of the tool truck.
This following list is a "work in progress" and will be updated when I have time and new information.
Snap-On Tools rebranded tools:
Pipe wrenches are manufactured by Ridge Tool Co. and sold under the RIDGID name.
Taps & Dies are made by American Tool Co. and sold under the HANSEN or IRWIN name. American also makes taps & dies for MAC, Matco and Cornwell. THe only difference is the color of the case. The Snap-On dies are adjustable, while others are not.
Snap ring and safety wire pliers are made by MILBAR .
The Blue-Point Moto-Tool is a perfect clone of a DREMEL.
Riviting and nut setting tools are made by MARSON.
Drill presses are identical to the JET name.
