Ray-Ban Sunglasses What Does Original Mean?
As of May 1998, I was an employee of Bausch & Lomb's RayBan Division at the "Frame Center" on Paul Road in Rochester NY. I was part of the sunglass design team, so I pretty familiar with what our group designed and put into production back in the 80s and 90's when RayBan was still owned by B&L. Within a year after I left B&L, the RayBan Division was sold off to one of our competitors, Luxotica based in Italy. Very soon after they bought RayBan, they started to close all of the offshore manufacturing facilities, with the Frame Center being the last to go. They weren't really interested in any of B&Ls manufacturing facilities, only the RayBan name. Now I'm not passing judgment on the quality of the new RayBan products that Luxotica is making, but in order to be the "authentic US made Bausch and Lomb Ray-Bans, here are some things to look for. The "Aviator", Clubmaster, Wayfarer, Traditionals, Signet, Classic Metals, etc. sunglasses can in a black box with gold lettering, (not gray and red). With only a few exceptions, the cases were all black with a gold RayBan stamped on the front. At that time, Marketing thought that this consistent gold on black color scheme upheld the RayBan look, and rarely did they stray from it. With only a few exceptions, Ray-Bans all had "Made in the USA" on them, Ray-Ban printed on the left lens and BL etched on the outside edge of both lenses. The LO205 (not RB2035), was the Aviator designed by Bausch in the 1940s for use by the US pilots in WWII. The Wayferer never came in red, yuck, and the the aviator never came in silver, also yuck!! So if your looking for a true US Made AUTHENTIC RAYBAN sunglass, not one that they are now passing off as such, you will now know what to look for.
