I see so many metal plates, mugs, pitchers and other pieces of table ware for sale and auction on Ebay marked RWP by the Wilton Company of Pennsylvania. Unfortunately, sellers mistakenly list these items as "pewter" or "antique pewter." This is incorrect.
These Wilton items are not pewter or antique. They are made of Armetale®, a non-toxic aluminum-based alloy trademarked by the Wilton company and suitable for cooking and dining use. It can be washed by hand with mild dish soap, but it should not be put in a dishwasher.
Many Wilton pieces have an historic look. The Wilton Classic Collection has a few current patterns, such as "Country French," that have the look of old pewter ware. This is part of the appeal of this table ware, which is very durable, finely crafted and pretty to look at.
Wilton Products was started around 1935 and first made cast iron products, many that bore the Wilton name. I have found several Wilton trivets at estate sales and resale shops over the years. Later the company became Wilton Brass. In 1963, Wilton began making Armetale®.
Today, Wilton Armetale is a thriving business that offers various lines of high quality metal products. It is possible to find a vintage Armetale® item from as early as 1963. But you will not find an antique pewter item by this company.
The maker's marks on RWP or Wilton items are not "touchmarks" found on antique pewter. They are modern maker's marks. You can do your own research on Wilton Armetale to get more information.
