I have been writing guides for some time now. I recently started Blogging and quickly found a real problem with the system. I MISSED more than I saw! This was distressing to me, because often times, the blogs I missed were from bloggers I really enjoy reading.
The standard search
I used the standard search to look up these blogger's blogs every now and then, to see if they had posted something new, or had responded to a comment I had made in one of their earlier posts. The bloggers' names are funny and sometimes long and typing is not my forte, so, this was a real labor!
It was worth the search, but there must be a better way!
I read other bloggers' experiencing the same challenge and read helpful advice from the savvy bloggers about bookmarking the blogs of their favorite bloggers...I did try that, and, of course, it worked! No more troubles with getting those funny names just right....still....
I'm losing time every time I search..is this the BEST method?
Last night, I read another answer to this oft asked question and decided it was worth a try. It required a little more up-front work, but, it was WELL worth the effort!
RSS - Really Simple Syndication (RSS) 2.0
This technology provides feeds of content from many sources, and can be used to "collect" the blogs of your favorite bloggers. This allows you to check the RSS feed now and then to see whether your tried and true bloggers have posted a new entry. You no longer need to use your searches or your bookmarks.
The RSS program presents me with what I refer to as the "Table of Contents" of the currently available blog entries of my favorite bloggers.
OK, but how much work is involved?
- Do a GOOGLE search and select a FREE RSS Reader
- Download the RSS reader, following the download instructions
- Install the RSS reader on your computer
- Open the RSS reader (start the program)
- Open another window on your computer
You are now ready to build your favorite "newspaper"
- Go to one of your favorite blogger's blog
- Scroll down the left menu, until to see the orange RSS button
- Left-click that button
- A page of code and instructions will appear, but all you need is the URL in the address field
- Copy the URL (Right-click, copy) from the address field at the top of your browser page
- Go back to the window running your RSS Reader
- Left Click on the Add option
- Paste the copied URL into the address window provided in the reader (Right-click, paste)
- Answer the question of where to file this URL (You can make multiple folders to best serve your needs)
- And save!
- Voila!
- Without hesitation, your "Table of Contents" fills up with all the blog entries of this blogger
- Repeat these steps for each blogger, whose blog entries you wish read regularly
Now, feel free to "ROAM ABOUT THE UNIVERSE!!"
Your RSS Feed will automatically capture your bloggers' newest entries, allowing you the freedom to write, list, sell, buy, (write, list, sell, buy) without ever missing a beat!!!
I hope you have enjoyed this guide and that the techniques I have offered (though certainly not mine) will help you better enjoy your BLOGGING experience! I'll be looking through the blogs...I might just add your's to my "subscription list!"
Thanks for reading!
