Collectors all over the world come to Ebay to purchase fine porcelain for their collection. As a quasi-expert, I am appalled at the number of pieces being portrayed as real RS Prussia on Ebay. More and more fakes (and better ones) are appearing on Ebay and many sellers of these fakes don't even know they are fake. However, many do and try to pass them off as the real deal.
The best way to know if you are buying a fake or not is to first buy all the books you can on RS Prussia. They have all the molds in them, and samples of real marks vrs. fake marks. The fakes will almost always have a mark on the bottom. (Many real RS Prussia pieces are marked and many are unmaked.) Study, study, study. Because an item has one or more bids on it is no guarantee that the piece is real. Some people knowingly collect the fakes and will bid on them.
There is a look to fine porcelain that can be distinguished by the trained eye. RS Prussia collectors can tell, usually at a glance, whether the piece is fake or not. And they certainly can identify a fake mark a mile away. However, even I have had to look twice at a few fake pieces appearing on Ebay that have not appeared before. If I'm not absolutely 100% sure, I don't bid. Period.
If it's the real deal, know your prices. Don't rely on the books as those are suggested values and Ebay really determines actual values. And always read the descriptions carefully. Ask questions. I have bought pieces from non-collectors who say that the piece is in excellent condition, only to find that there was a spider crack or other defect which apparently the non-collector missed. It's easy to do.
RS Prussia's value keeps going up, more for some pieces than others. Know which ones are more valuable and desired than others. Watch Ebay and learn.
