Parents and caregivers are frequently asking for new suggestions for old problems. One "old problem" is diaper rash.
As a registered nurse on a Women's Care floor, we frequently have newborns with severe cases of diaper rash. Often these rashes are attributed to Neonatal Narcotic Withdrawal Syndrome, prematurity of the newborn, or long-term antibiotic use among other things.
We have a formula for "Magic Butt Balm" it is as follows:
- Desitin: 1 large tube
- Maalox: 30 ml
- Karaya powder (add to desired consistency)...this is a product typically for ostomy patients. It can be purchased at most pharmacies.
Mix the ingredients in a container with a tight-fitting lid. You want to add the Maalox and Karaya powder as needed for the proper spreading consistency. You want to form a fairly thick paste for the baby's bum. You will generally see a noticeable improvement in the first day or two. As with any product you will be using on your infant, I recommend giving the pediatrician's office a call, speaking to the nurse on call, describing the baby's issue, and asking if this is a proper remedy for your particular case of diaper rash. If you do not see a noticeable improvement, definitely take the infant into the office for a look-see.
