With the new array of R/C helicopters on the market I am often asked " GAS or ELECTRIC"?

GAS( nitro, gasoline,Turbine)

Pro:  typically larger machines, easier to see in flight,Can handle some wind, Power output is constant through out the flight, Parts are easier to handle,Usually easier to find, Can be made into larger Scale Helicopters, if already flying nitro planes some of your knowledge continues on to this area.

CONS: Large size is for outside only. Exhaust oil and dirt will need to be cleaned off the heli, especially during the "hover" stage of training. Need accessories for the engine like; Fuel, Starter,Glow Plug,Glug Plug Ignitor,Fuel Pump to put fuel into you heli, Misc field box items.

ELECTRIC (mico,mini, large)

Pro: most are small enough to fly indoors, Most micro, mini heli's are made supper stable and anyone can fly them. Electric motors are very reliable. NO messy fuel or exhaust to clean up after flying. Conversion kits available for nitro models. Price range from $20 to $2000 depends on the complexity of thr desired machine.

CONS: You will need to have Batteries and chargers specifically for your type of batteries. Larger helis have expensive speed controllers and Lipolly battery packs. Will need multiple battery pack if you want to fly constantly( batteries of larger helis can take 30min or longer to charge), Smaller helicopters(exception on the havoc, similar) are more fragile with smaller parts. The More stable the helicopter the less control you have.(A true helicopter needs at least 4ch and a SWASHPLATE for control) the other are simply controlling it drift*. Most are not recommend for outside flight.

* These 2-3ch helicopters are great for training and build up your skills of controlling power to achieve a hover. This alone could save you hundreds of dollars on your first crash of a larger heli

These tips are simply some of the factors you need to consider for your purchase. And todays modern R/C helicopter can have characteristics of both.

GOOD LUCK AND HAPPY FLYING
