RAISING PUPPY GUIDELINE

Week One ( Days 1 - 7)

  • Development of the Puppies
    • 90% of the time is spent sleeping
    • 10% of it time is eating
    • Susceptible to heat and cold
    • Instinctive reflexes; crawls to seek warmth and to nurse
    • They can turn over if place upside down
    • Needs moms help for potty time
    • Rapid development of the central nervous system
    • Need constent care from mom
    • Temperature is 94 - 97
    • May lose 10% of weight after birth, but should start gaining again
    • Weight should be double by the end of the week
  • Care of the Puppies
    • Weight and Chart it daily
    • Examine each pup daily
    • Trim nails if needed
    • Keep whelping box temp around 85 (If its hotter outside thurn on a box fan or air conditioning, if it is colder then a heat lamp should be placed over the whelping box
    • If Required by your breed, Tails, Ears, or dew claw docking should be done
  • Care of the Bitch
    • Fluids for the dam for the first 24 hours, chicken or beef broth is great
    • Feed 3 full meals a day after that
    • Supplement with 250mg of vitamin c twice daily
    • Fussy Puppies?, Supplement dam with vitamn b complex
    • Check mammary glands twice daily (look for signs of mastitis ~Swelling, Hardness, and Pus)
    • Keep an eye on the vagianl discharge (looking for signs of infection)
    • Make sure the dam eats, drinks and uses the bathroom
  • To Do List
    • Keep detailed records on puppies weight and behavior
    • Keep charting dam's temp
    • Call puppy buyers with the whelping results

Week Two (Days 8-14)

  • Development of the Puppies
    • Eyes should open around 8 - 10 days
    • Ears should open around 13 - 17 days
    • Temps will be around 97-99 degrees
  • Care of the Puppies
    • Keep whelping box temp around 80 degrees
    • Begin handling pups in different ways
    • Trim nails if needed
  • Care of the Bitch
    • Feed dam three times her normal amount of food
  • To Do List
    • Continue as above

Week Three (Days 15-21)

  • Development of the Puppies
    • Eruption of the teeth
    • Puppies will stand and start to walk
    • Will being to lap liquids
    • Potty without stimulation now
    • Becomes aware of enviorment
    • Starts to play with littermates
    • Sense of smell develops
    • Puppies will start to find a prefered spot as to where to relieve themselves
  • Care of the Puppies
    • Start adding toys to puppies life
    • Start giving specific stresses when handlng, like pinch and ear or toe gently
    • Start giving 1 meal a day of milk replacer to lap, after two days add some mushy food
    • Weigh pups every 2 days now
    • Give the pups a old shirt of yours to play with
    • Start weekly grooming sessions
  • Care of the Bitch
    • Continue as above
  • To Do List
    • Purchase milk replacer to feed pups

Week Four (Days 22-28)

  • Development of the Puppies
    • Begins to eat food
    • Begins to wag tail, bark bare teeth, bite, chase and growl
    • Can use legs well
    • Tires Easy
    • Depth Perception Starts
  • Care of the Puppies
    • Try to keep mom with the a lot
    • Give each pup indiviual attention
    • Offer food that has the consistency of cooked oatmeal
  • Care of the Bitch
    • Continue as above
  • To Do List
    • Start limited dam's access to pups before offering them food

Week Five (Days 29-35)

  • Development of the Puppies
    • Group activities will begin
    • Dominance order starts
    • A rapid growth and delvelopment
  • Care of the Puppies
    • Reduce the fluid in the puppies food
    • Make sure owners start to come see the pups
    • Begin weaning
  • Care of the Bitch
    • Start food reduction to discourage milk production
    • Keep a close eye on the mammary glands
  • To Do List
    • Schedule Vet Visit

Week Six (Days 36-42)

  • Development of the Puppies
    • Growth and developement continue
  • Care of the Puppies
    • Offer soft damp food
    • Weight Weekly
    • Individual attention is crucial away from its littermates
  • Care of the Bitch
    • Prepare dam for weaning
      • Day 1 - no food
      • Day 2 - 1/4 normal maintenance meal
      • Day 3 - 1/2 normal maintenance meal
      • Day 4 - 3/4 normal maintenance meal
      • Day 5 - Full amount of normal maintenace meal
    • Keep dam on puppy food for several weeks to help her recover from the strain of breeding, whelping and raising the puppies
    • Keep watch on mammary glands

Week Seven (Days 43-49)

  • Development of the Puppies
    • Has total hearing and visual capacity
    • Will investigate anything
    • Doesn't respond to name
  • Care of the Puppies
    • Pups should be weaned and on regular food
  • Care of the Bitch
    • Watch mammary glands until milk is completely dried up

Week Eight (Days 50-56)

  • Development of the Puppies
    • First Fear Period
    • Starts to learn its name
  • Care of the Puppies
    • Do not ship puppies
    • Can start training in small short steps
    • Pups can go to new homes
  • Care of the Bitch
    • Continue as above
  • To Do List
    • Continue as above

Week Nine (Days 57-63)

  • Development of the Puppies
    • Develops strong dominant and subordinate behavior among the littermates
    • Begins to learn the right behavior
    • Motor skills improve
    • Short attention span
    • Starts to focus attention on humans then other puppies
  • Care of the Puppies
    • Continue with lot of individual attention
    • Separate Littermates
    • Start house training

Week Ten (Days 64-70)

  • Development of the Puppies
    • Safe to ship puppies by air
