Also known as woodburning, it is an artistic technique that uses a hot tool to burn wood, leather, canvas, paper, ect, creating a design/drawing/painting. By varying the pressure, heat and type of tip a varity of lines and and shadows are created, bringing the artwork to life.
How is it done?
Let me take you through the steps I take. First I select a reference photo.
I crop it to what I want to include in the artwork,
then draw/trace it onto the media I have selected. This gives me a line drawing/pattern to follow. I this case have used 1/4" plywood cut to 4"x6". From there I use a woodburning tool to trace the line drawing into the media. The tool I use is a standard wood burning tool with a small straight line tip in it. It leaves behind brown/black lines that are burned permanently into the media, creating a textured drawing. I then sand the piece, or use an eraser, to remove the still visible graphite left from the original drawing.
Next comes the painting-coloring. In this case I used original Prismacolor pencils, adding layers until the desired painting is achieved.
The first two layers have been added, the white and the first grey.
Another layer of grey has been added.
And another layer of grey.
Now the last layers are added, creating the shadows and movement desired. The over haze of color, which is caused by blending the colors, is erased. It is then ready for a light spray of fixative, I use lacquer. Now it is ready for the customer. You?
