If anywhere in the description, the seller says that the box has been opened for whatever reason, (like "to verify the contents") you should assume that the installation key has been used.
This can present major conflicts in ownership. For example, Microsoft Office 2003 (any version) must be activated once it's installed. It can only be activated if it has never been activated before, or if it's been activated on the very same computer before. Otherwise, you'd have to call Microsoft and explain that you upgraded your PC and need to activate it on the new one. If Microsoft sees the same key still active on a previous PC after activating it for you, they will de-activate the SECOND installation!!
BEWARE OF SELLERS WHO CLAIM THEIR SOFTWARE IS "NEW" BUT STATE THAT THE BOX HAS BEEN OPENED!!!
WHY DO YOU SUPPOSE THAT NO RETAIL STORE WILL REFUND MONEY FOR OPENED SOFTWARE???
ONLY PURCHASE SOFTWARE THAT IS IN A FACTORY SEALED BOX.
