If you decide to purchase a mining claim on ebay, remember to do your research first. Not only do you need to learn how to get the gold off your new claim, you will need to know crucial information in order to properly maintain your claim, including how and when to pay taxes and maintenance fees. The seller will most likely help you transfer your claim, but it is your responsibility to make sure it is done. The biggest mistake a buyer can make is assuming the deal is done and there is nothing left to do after they receive the deed. Even if the seller takes care of the entire transfer for you, MAINTENANCE FEES OR PROOF OF LABOR AND TAXES ARE DUE AND YOUR NOTICE OF INTENT NEEDS TO BE RECORDED STATING WHETHER YOU PAID THE MAINTENANCE FEE OR PROVIDED LABOR AND COMPLIED WITH SMALL MINERS WAIVER. IF YOU DO NOT UNDERSTAND THIS OR HOW TO DO THIS, YOU MAY NEED HELP COME SEPTEMBER GETTING IT DONE, OTHERWISE YOUR CLAIM WILL BECOME INACTIVE.
Every September, the new owner must make sure the maintenance fees are paid or they perform and report the labor for the year. And taxes need to be paid as well, but some tax bills may not come to you, the buyer, they may go to the previous owner, thus making it neccessary for you to call or visit the local assayers office before taxes are due to request the bill, or make payment. Taxes on a 80 acre claim usually run about $35-$45 per year, and maintenance fees vary from $10 if labor is performed, to $125 for regular fees-no labor. If there is a mistake or these fees and forms are not submitted, the claim will lapse and become inactive. Then you are out the amount you paid on ebay, and the claim needs to be relocated, which can cost up to $250 per claim. There are companies that will help you do this, I will, but it is uaually time consuming and fees may vary.
When buying a mining claim on ebay also keep in mind, you are not buying land to build your retirement home on. You are only buying the mineral rights and the right to extract minerals. I recommend the BLM website for more great info.
