This guide will cover only the Prussian Military Long Service 2nd Class Badge's ribbon. The Militär Dienstauszeichnung 2. Klasse Schnalle (often abbreviated MDA 2.) was instituted in 1825 by the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm III. It was designed to be worn slighly below the heart.
The MDA 2. has a very finely woven high quality blue silk ribbon with yellow (gold) edges (UV-negative). The clasp has a double border with F.W.III. centered on a pebbled background. It is interesting to note that this ribbon (both UV-positive and UV-negative) is still being produced for collectors. Cotton and other materials were used for replacement ribbons and while possibly official, they were not official initial issue. It is interesting to note that I have seen official contemporary ribbons respondind to the UV-positive test but this is accounted for by close examination which reveals some sort of impregnating cleaning material found imbedded (or saturated) into the ribbon. If you collect contemporary ribbons, my best advice remains: Buy only from a reputable dealer who specializes in Prussian medals.
