Planning a winter vacation to a sunny land? Or live in a place where the sun is strong all year round? Don't forget that the sun can do almost as much damage to your skin in the fall and winter as it can in the summer, more so if you are very fair skinned. Don't think you're automatically protected if you have dark skin - you are at risk for skin cancer (just less than fair skinned people) and the sun's damaging rays will wrinkle and dry your skin too. In a snowy winter wonderland, the sun can reflect off the snow - so use protection when skiing or having other winter fun. So protect your self from the sun year round!
Rub it On!
- Use a sunscreen that blocks both UVA and UVB rays.
- SPF of at least 15. Higher if you are very fair skinned.
- Protect your lips too!
- Use a higher SPF on nose, tips of ears, etc.
Cover Up!
- Long-sleeved shirt and long pants with a tight weave provide the best protection.
- At least try to wear a t-shirt or a beach cover-up. Use in conjunction with sunscreen.
- Stay in the shade when you can.
- A wet t-shirt offers you much less UV protection than does a dry one.
Grab a Hat!
- Broad brim, going all the way around, that shades your face, ears, and the back of your neck.
- When wearing a baseball cap, you also should protect your ears and the back of your neck by wearing other clothing, using sunscreen with at least SPF 15, or---when possible---by staying in the shade.
- Choose a tightly woven fabric, such as canvas, which works best to protect your skin from UV rays. When possible, avoid straw hats with holes that let sunlight through.
Sunglasses
-
Block nearly 100% of both UVA and UVB.
-
Wrap-around lenses work best because they will block UV rays from sneaking in from the side or from behind.
Seek Shade
- Avoid the sun between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.
- Seek shade under an umbrella, tree, or other shelter before---not after---you need relief from the sun.
- UV rays can reflect off virtually any surface, including sand, snow and concrete, and can reach you in the shade. Use sunscreen or wear protective clothing when you're outside --- even when you're hanging out in the shade.
