Each year, we dispose of hundreds of canister vacuums that were destroyed due to improper storage.
Lets face it, one of the down sides to using a canister vacuum is having to drag it out, and put
it all back away! We own three canister vacuums, and have a multiple levels in our home.
One vacuum per level, and storage space is limited. Over the years, we have found some ways
to save space, and ultimately save a small bundle on vacuum repairs.
These are some of the things that can be prevented by storing your canister vacuum properly:
* Hose splits, cracks and power shorts (not to mention unsightly duct tape!)
* Rusted motor bearings
* Warped and prematurely worn brush rolls
* Vacuum ran without a bag (yikes! This one is messy!)
Your canister vacuum should be stored separated in three main parts.

Your canister vacuum should be stored separated in three main parts.
1. The main motor unit or canister:
- Store in a dry place, damp basements or areas with high humidity can rust motor and fan parts.
- Always store with a bag in place. You never know who may use it and assume there is a bag already installed.
- Power cord should be wound or wrapped up, if your vacuum does not have a retractable cord, a couple of Velcro straps work well.
- Store in a dry place
- The best way to prevent splitting, cracking and shorts is to hang the hose up using one of these methods:
- A mounted hose hanger (very inexpensive way to save alot, and less hassle than remaining methods)
- Around a clothes hanger
- Over a clothes rod
- Store in a dry place (a boot closet is not recommended, if wet boots are placed there)
- Power nozzle should be placed on its front bumper, so the brushes on the brush roll are not contacting the floor. The wand/nozzle assembly will take up less space as it will fit flat against the closet wall.
- Use the canister to hold the wand/power nozzle in place.
