"I get the question all the time, "What is a Proof Coin?"
Proof:
A proof coin is a special coin, made in a special way just for collectors.
Proof coins have been made since 1936, but they have not been made every year. 1965-1967 they made Special Mint Sets which are half way between Proof and Uncirculated Coins.
Special dies are selected for perfection and polished and cleaned. They are then wiped clean and re-polished every 15-25 Impressions. Even the coin blanks are polished to make sure that the coin is as perfect as possible. Proof coins are hand fed into the coin press, one at a time. The blank coin receives multiple strikes from the press to make the details of the coin stand out. Proof coins are very slow to make compared to regular coins for circulation.
Proof coins were originally made in the Philadelphia Mint up to 1968, when they changed to the San Francisco Mint.
Uncirculated:
Uncirculated coins are just that. They are standard coins found in your pocket, that have not been put out for circulation. Uncirculated coins come in Cellophane (Cello) which is a type of plastic. They come in sets for each year, which include P&D Minted coins, and Sometime S, such as 1980.
Good Luck!
