Primitives: Time Worn, Simplistic and Very Collectible:

Primitives tend to convey everything that represents a more simplistic lifestyle and time gone by. One I think many of us long to get back to.  With the warm and muted colors and natural distressed wear, each piece we collect seems to tell a story. There's something so intriguing about imagining what that story may have been. What that piece may have represented in someone's life that lived so many years ago. Your love for Primitives may have begun from simply stepping into a shop or antique mall and finding a old, time worn piece that just caught your eye. There are many others that have grown so fond of Primitives and dedicate their entire homes to recapturing that time-worn look that is their home decor and collectibles.

The great thing about collecting Primitives unlike many other antiques is that perfection is not required. In fact, the less perfect the piece the better. You find yourself drawn to pieces with more distress lines and more characture.

Dolls are another wonderful example of Primitives. Way back in those days we can see children from families of meager means that cherished these faceless and less than perfect dolls. Dolls which were made for them by their Mothers or other relatives using whatever materials were available at the time. Today, many artists make reproduction Primitive Dolls. These dolls while not authentic do indeed capture the time-worn appearance that their authentic counterparts had. There are some very talented Primitive doll artists right here on eBay and you can find them simply by typing in Primitive doll into the search box. Or click any of the highlighted links in this guide to start your search for that next great treasure.

The world of Primitives is so large and extensive it seems impossible to go into detail on all the wonderful Primitive Pieces out there. But for example some collectors enjoy collecting and displaying crocks, quilts, make do's, wool rugs, hand made bonnets, and dolls just to name a few.

Another wonderful thing about creating reproduction Primitives is that we find that anything from that time period can be made to look Primitive. Staying focus on the time period is important. But for example you could take a brand new dresser and transform it into a reproduction time-worn piece simply with a bit of paint and a sander.

Simplify seems to be the "poster child" word when it comes to describing Primitives. Only second to "worn or distressed". Times were simple back then in the 1800-1900's and families worked hard and with what little they had they made do. They were creative in making what they had into useful things and nothing was wasted.

I hope as you continue on your journey of interest in Primitives you will find those pieces of history you are seeking. They warm your home, are easy on the eyes and most of all they warm your heart.

Primitive Blessings,

K. Arvay
