Precious Moments was originally created by American Illustrator Sam Butcher in the 1970's.  The figurines are of children with teardrop shaped eyes inscribed with inspirational sayings.  The inspirational sayings were of a Christian theme.  Sam Butcher is a born again Christian.  Sam originally started by "scribbling" the drawings on cards and letters to friends and family.  He and a friend Bill Biel then started a company named Jonathan and David (J&D) selling Sam's are on cards and posters.  The Porcelain Bisque Figurines have been marketed since 1977. 

October 1988 will mark the 30th Anniversary of Precious Moments.  A Limited Edition Precious Moment figurine will be available for purchase at selected stores (SRP $45.00).  "Cherish the Treasure Within".  It is a girl in a slicker on a beach holding a clamshell with a beautiful pearl inside.  By her side is a sea otter looking up at her.  "Pearls" are the symbol of a 30th anniversary, so they placed a pearl in this figurine to commemorate this event.  This figurine will have a special event only understamp and will retire the same day.  A matching cloissone' pin will be given with each figurine sold.  Another feature of the event is the Limited Edition 30the Anniversary "Celebrating the Gift of Life Now and Forever" figurine.  These special pieces will be signed by Sam Butcher and are numbered 1 thru 30 in the edition.
