We've proven several times that trying to make adjustments to an APC device ID after PowerChute software is installed is NOT worth the effort. Every time we try to change the identification information for the un-interruptible power supply (UPS) something seems to go wrong. Our 'best practice' is to do a total de-install and re-install of software EVERY TIME there is any change that affects the software's ability to recognize the UPS device.
Just proved this advice again 7-31-07:
-------------------------------------------------------
A swap of UPS devices for the same server, a SmartUPS 1000XL to SmartUPS 1000, managed somehow to change the Windows device entry under the device list name 'Batteries'. The desired device entry is 'APC battery Backup' rather than the device name 'HID' that we found. Again, a complete uninstall and re-install of the software proved the rule!
While updating this guide we became aware of a well-composed guide on 'Buying UPS Batteries' that you may also find to be of interest.
