Power Ranger Toys & Power Ranger Action Figures
The Power Rangers is a mega franchise owned by Disney. The franchise evolved from an idea borrowed from the Japanese Sentai series. The characters were introduced to American audiences through a TV show called The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (later re-dubbed as simply Power Rangers), which aired successfully on Fox for nearly a decade (1993 to 2001). A year following the TV show's discontinuance, Disney picked up the series for rebroadcast.
Power Ranger toys typically reincarnate famous heroes from the series. Rangers wear helmets that shield their identities from potential villains. Rangers are notably defined by their team colors. In Japan, male rangers wore yellow. To prevent western audiences from being confused by the casting of male characters in feminized colors (e.g. yellow, pink), the American version cast all yellow rangers as female.
On TV, the Power Rangers have teamed up with other popular creations, such as the characters from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. While even the most well-constructed toys on the market cannot began to ape the Rangers' penchants for invisibility, hyper speed, and telekinesis, the toys have sold remarkably well, particularly to era collectors.
Power Ranger action figures contain transformable aspects to mimic the morphing action, which the animated characters utilize to battle evil. During the apex of the Power Rangers phenomenon, record executive Simon Cowell (who later went on to executive produce American Idol and create other series, such as The X Factor in Britain and American Inventor in the US) popularized the show's theme song in the UK.
