This guide covers some of the individual postcards published or sponsored by the Boy Scouts of America
between 1910 and 1970. Sets and series of cards and those for Philmont, Schiff, and the National Headquarters are covered in other guides.

This guide does not include individual postcards published privately, published by local councils, or published by local Troops or individuals.  If there is positive response, they will be covered in additional guides.

It can be quite difficult to decide which cards to include in this category since it overlaps with postcards issued by the BSA for advertising and fund raising purposes.  Unlike the cards listed in sets and series, not all of these cards were available through the various equipment catalogs.  As a result, this is one area where a collector carefully watching eBay can find material not previously known.

Known cards include the following:

  • Boys' Life Gift Card  (1916)
In 1916, as a promotion for Boys' Life magazine, the Boy Scouts allowed someone to send the December (Christmas) isssue to a Scout as a gift.  Along with the magazine, the sender received a copy of this gift postcard to send.  It contains a space for the name of the sender and a message stating that the magazine would be arriving separately.

It is quite possible that similar gift cards were available in different years:  the author has not seen any.
  • Third Liberty Loan Drive (1918)
The Boy Scouts issued a postcard with a design by C. J. Leyendecker to promote the sales of War Bonds.  See the separate C. J. Leyendecker Guide  with information about the postcards and other collectible items.
  • First National Jamboree (1937)
The First National Boy Scout Jamboree in Washington, D.C. was postponed from 1935 to 1937 because of an outbreak of infantile paralysis.

For the occasion of the rescheduled event, and its conjunction with the 150th anniversary of the U.S. constitution, Howard Chandler Christy designed this striking "linen" postcard.
  • General Purpose Postcard  (1940's)

  • Jamboree Boy's Life Jamboree Exhibits  (1950, 1953, 1957, and later)
Postcards were available at the Boy's Life exhibits with the design shown, first in brown and later in green.  Later Jamborees continued the tradition but with design changes.

  • General Purpose Postcard  (1950's)

  • General Purpose Postcard  (1950's)

  • Fourth National Jamboree
The U.S. Air Force's precision aerial demonstration team The Thunderbirds performed for the Jamboree.  This card was issued in conjunction with the performance and the golden anniversary of the U.S. Air Force.

  • Boy's Life QSL Card
A QSL card is sent to verify reception of a short wave radio signal.  The Boy's Life Radio club made cards available for the purpose.  (Many individual Scouts and Troops had their own QSL cards printed, but they do not fit the general theme of this guide.)

  • Sixth National Jamboree (1964)

  • World Jamboree (1967)

This guide stops at 1970, but the BSA has issued postcards for every Jamboree since.
