The market for mugs, menues, napkins, postcards and more Polynesian Pop ephemera is very volatile, but growing. A handful of big time collectors make rare items high dollar items. The more common items are starting to settle into a standard value. The range for mugs is from $5 to a record high of $1400, with a typical somewhat rare mug going for $75-150. Few top $150 these days. Due to the high prices for vinatge mugs, there is a growing demand for cheaper items like postcards and matchbooks.
A location name on the mug makes it far more valuable. Tracing it to a particular location is a huge plus. Some people collect items from particular places. And many mugs were mass produced, but customized for various locations. Even if the restaurant name is not on the mug, if it comes with other items, like a menu, you can then place the item and perhaps date it, to add to its value to collectors.
A price guide is not truly possible at this time and will likely remain so. The market is too small to have many stable prices. An idea of rarity is your only guess as to price, other than searching Ebay completed items for the item in question. Knowing the details of the stuff is the only way to guess prices.
There is also a strong market in modern limited edition tiki mugs. Their value is generally closely tied to the designer. It is a fan based value. Crazy Al and Gecko are among the most sought after makers. Shag is still popular, though his high value mark was probably a few years ago. The makers Tiki Farm and Muntiki are the biggest manufacturers.
