If you like this guide, please take a second and click the yes button below. The biggest difference between the Pocket pc and the new Palm Treo 700w is the obvious difference in screen size. If you are used to tapping with a stylus on the large screen format of a pocket pc, you will notice the difference. The 700w is very small by comparison, and the built in keyboard is too small to effectively type on. So i still use a stylus to type on it, but it takes some getting used to. Main point in buying either of these types of devices: Speed of the processor, size of memory (ram), blue tooth compatible, screen size.
The pocket pc has hundreds of websites with free software (please see my other guide on free software), with everything from utilities that help clean your trash, to foreign language. and the pocket pc has enough memory to handle these different applications. The 700w comes pre loaded with all the software that you need, but there really isn't much free space to download very many additional applications, although they are available.
The Treo does not let you adjust memory usage between storage and programs, a great tool with most Pocket PC's. This allows the device to run faster. And, because the Treo comes with pre-loaded software, it does not leave very much room for additional programs that you might down load, like a foreign language dictionary. A few of the issues that you will have with Treo: The Treo will freeze up periodically, as it can not handle many instructions at once, like opening an application, while closing another. A soft reset usually solves it, but it is bothersome. You can watch live TV on your Treo or Pocket PC phone. Picture clarity is excellent, especially catching live tv on the Treo, but occasionally it will cause the unit to freeze. The Pocket PC rarely freezes.
The Treo is very nicely sized, and can fit in a shirt pocket, something that the pocket pc can't. the Treo is lightning fast, especially with a broadband connection through your cell provider. The Treo also has a great voice dialing and recognition software built in, so you merely speak the name, the computer confirms it, and you say yes, and it dials. No problem dialing on the road. It is also blue tooth capable so you can easily connect to an ear piece (sold seperately about 60$) and have hands free communication. The pocket pc can do that as well, if it comes with blue tooth.
Both models run windows, the 700w and any Pocket PC, so the biggest deciding factors are screen size, and physical size of the device. If you use your phone to access Excel and to surf websites a lot, you probably should have a Pocket PC. If you value portability, then buy the Palm Treo 700w. The Treo also comes with a built in camera, that takes high quality photos and video, with sound.
In summary, if you use your device mostly as phone, than get the Treo. If you are a heavy user of a device for e mail, web surfing, news reading, and personal organization, get a Pocket PC.
