Plymouth Rock Items
Everyone knows the story of the Pilgrims and Plymouth Rock. Not that many people know that you can get great Plymouth Rock collectible items on eBay.
The Story
The Pilgrims, who celebrated the first Thanksgiving in America, were fleeing religious persecution in their native England. On Sept. 6, 1620 the Pilgrims set sail for the New World on a ship called the Mayflower. The long trip was cold and damp and took 65 days. Since there was the danger of fire on the wooden ship, the food had to be eaten cold. They ate cold hard biscuits and because they could not save water, everyone drank beer, even the children
Although they had first sighted land off Cape Cod they did not settle until they arrived at Plymouth, which had been named by Captain John Smith in 1614. It was there that the Pilgrims decide to settle. Plymouth offered an excellent harbor. A large brook offered a resource for fish. The Pilgrims biggest concern was attack by the local Native American Indians. But the Patuxets were a peaceful group and did not prove to be a threat.
Plymouth Rock
Plymouth Rock is considered to be the traditional site where the Pilgrams set foot on land. However, this actually not the case. They actually first set foot on land in Provincetown which is across the bay from Plymouth.
Plymouth Rock is actually a boulder of granite that is often decribed as "disappointing" given its small size. The cork was actually split in two in 1774 when they tried to move it. Since then the rock has been moved around a bunch of times and the date "1620" has been carved into the side. Given that it was broken and moved so many times, there are a number of pieces that have preserved and passed down through different families.
Plymouth
Plymouth is a town in southeastern Massachusetts, on Plymouth Bay, about 55 km (34 mi) southeast of Boston on the way down Rte. 3 to Cape Cod. Plymouth is the first permanent European settlement in New England. Today it is mostly tourist center where people come to look at Plymouth Rock and spend some time at the beach. The Plymouth Rock, a tourist attraction, is on the shore under a granite canopy; recreations of Plimoth Plantation and the Mayflower are also there.
