Pros vs Cons: Installing Yellow Dog Linux 5.0 Phoenix for Playstation 3

Let's start with the Cons:

- No Adobe Flash Player 9 has been developed for the power cell on PS3 Linux (PPC). This means that YouTube and Google Video Will not play and any other site (which many exist) that use Flash.

- No Java JRE. While not entirely true, the lastest versions are not available. By searching IBM's website for a Java JRE package for the S3 which uses the same ppc as the PS3, you'll find Java JRE Version 5. The lastest version is up to 7.x. This means Java Script forms and small Java Applications just won't work. Try going to time.gov and clicking on a state. Notice the Clock. That won't be available on PS3.

- Playstation 3 is slow when running most applications, and the installation of Yellow Dog is long and can be confusing to newbies.

- Yellow Dog Linux only provides updates to paying individuals. Sellers on eBay most likely have burned copies which are available for FREE from Terrasoftsolutions. All you need is a DVD burner. If you buy a burnt copy, you will not get updates. Each time a new update comes out, you'll have to re-install YDL.

- Last but not least, NO BLUETOOTH, NO N-VIDIA DRIVERS. Yup you heard me. Bluetooth drivers not released from sony yet and nvidia can't release them either because of disturbution copyright conflicts with sony. Lame.

- Can't play Blu-ray movies.

- Can't play PS3 games within Linux

- Can't even use your controller as a game stick.

Pros:

- Fancy Interface, Easy to Use GUI.

- OpenOffice, similar to Microsoft's Office with Document support.

- GAIM instant messenger.

- Multiple Desktops, because you know how many programs you'll be running on your PS3...LOL.

- Hmmm.... Kinda pointless now I think about it.

IT HAS MORE PROGRAMS, QUICKER LOAD TIMES, AND BEST OF ALL, YOU DON'T INSTALL IT. IT RUNS LIVE FROM YOUR DVD OR CD.

JUST MAKE A BOOT CD BY DOWNLOADING OTHEROS.SELF AND OTHEROS.BLD AND PUTTING THEM IN TWO FOLDERS ==> PS3 ==> OTHEROS ==> (2) FILES. BURN ON SLOW SPEED LIKE 4x. ENJOY!!
